What is a Track System?
Tracks also known as ‘Paddock Paradise’ are essentially a domesticated approach to replicate the most natural environment possible. By creating a network of laneways or tracks and placing hay stations strategically horses are encouraged to move over a variety of surfaces. The horses live in a herd environment full of enrichment and this enables them to play and display natural behaviours.
A track system supports equine physical and emotional well-being. This is because although horses have been domesticated for 1000’s of years, they have not evolved so far from their days of living in the wild. Like all living beings they require movement, appropriate diet and space to thrive. Over the years it has become commonplace to provide stables and while these have their uses, they restrict movement and separate horses from their peers. Adding to this rich single species grasses and individual turnout horses can become stressed, obese and suffer increased inflammation more commonly known as laminitis.
Not all track systems are grass free, but they do aim to offer meadow and rough grasses as part of a balanced diet to support the immune system of a healthy horse. With a rise in track systems in the UK, USA and the EU there is growing evidence that these systems offer the best support for the horse. We are delighted to bring our approach of the track system to Co. Kerry
