8 Reasons Why Horses Thrive on a Track System

We are constantly learning how we can improve our relationship with horses, whether we are in it for pleasure or profit, the well-being of our horses is paramount to their and our success. On my journey, I realised that one of the largest impacts on my horse’s life wasn’t me (although how we ride, our tack etc is incredibly important too!) but something that was many more hours of the day than the few I spent with them. I’m talking of course about the environment. So I wanted to share with you 8 reasons why I believe horses thrive on the track system and the improvements I have seen.

  • Freedom 365 – On the track system horses are afforded freedom every day, there is no ‘limited turnout’ or overnight stabling. Horses are free to move around which is very good for their lymphatic system!
  • High Fibre Diet – We offer horses forage which is high in fibre and low in sugar. Being on a track allows us to control and monitor their food intake and close off access to grass without restricting movement.
  • Healthy Digestion – Horses need to keep a small amount of food moving through their digestive system with no than 4hrs break, horses have the choice of when and where to eat, with a range of trickle feeders and enrichment for them to access.
  • Improved Fitness – Moving 24/7 means that the horses are constantly exercising themselves. We include extras such as logs and stones for improved muscle toning and proprioception.
  • Self Trimming – Offering a variety of surfaces the hooves are constantly self trimming and stimulating the circulation within the hoof and lower leg.
  • Herd Behaviours – Horses live in a herd to keep safe from predators. Being able to remain in a herd and part-take in interactions such as play and mutual grooming help them build relationships and feel safe.
  • Reduced Stress – Being more relaxed from improved sleep and feeling safe, the horse’s body is naturally less stressed producing less cortisol which is better for the body, especially for horses suffering from EMS and Laminitis.
  • Improved Learning – Feeling safe within the herd combined with lower cortisol, horses are able to access deeper and longer periods of sleep which is great for the brain and their ability to process information while training.

So if you were wondering if it would be worth creating your own track system either on your own place, at your livery or finding a track livery these are lots of reasons why to go ahead. We’ll post some more tips on creating a track soon!
